Jackson Police said they arrived at the scene after they were alerted of an “accident,” according to the outlet.
The Hinds County coroner identified the victim as 41-year-old Darrell Sheriff, the outlet reported.
“My prayers, condolences, thoughts, my heart goes out to his family,” Jackson Police Chief Joseph Wade said during a press briefing.
Wade referred to the victim’s death by hot asphalt “horrific” in his remarks, according to the outlet. (RELATED: School Bus Crashes Head On Into Dump Truck, Sending 15 Kids To Hospital)
Sheriff’s family arrived at the scene of his tragic death and spoke to the police chief.. They expressed their love for Sheriff by telling the chief that their deceased family member was a good and hard-working man, according to Wade.
Sheriff’s death does appear to have been the result of an accident, authorities said, but Jackson Police are still conducting an investigation.
The victim “tried to fight to make it through those injuries but it was just too enormous for him to survive,” Wade said.
