Incident Involving Teenage Fans at WNBA Game

During a Seattle basketball game on Tuesday night, two teenage girls were reportedly brought to tears after an encounter with Seattle Storm co-owner Celeste Keaton. The girls had brought signs to express their gratitude towards Indiana Fever player Sophie Cunningham for her support of women’s sports.

The Fever clinched a 105-95 victory at Climate Pledge Arena, marking their fourth consecutive win. However, this game gained attention for another reason. Fans were divided over the participation of transgender athletes in women’s sports, with some rallying in support of Cunningham’s stance against allowing males in women’s competitions.

Sitting close to the court, the young fans held signs reading “We love you Sophie” and “Thank you for speaking up, Sophie.” They described the experience to journalist Brandi Kruse.

“We were just sitting there, being respectful, watching the game, and quietly supporting both teams,” one girl explained. “Then this woman came up to us.”

As they recounted their experience, they mentioned that Keaton confronted them aggressively.

“I’ve never been yelled at like that,” one girl said. “I mean, I’ve seen hate online, but that doesn’t really affect me. I was surprised because I thought she’d be nice, but then she started screaming at us and calling us names.”

Kruse informed the girls that their accuser was indeed a co-owner of the Storm, a fact they were unaware of prior to the confrontation.

Last week, Cunningham had a feature on ESPN, where she voiced her opinions on the involvement of transgender athletes in sports.

In her remarks, she stated, “I’ve received a lot of backlash, with people claiming I hate trans individuals, which isn’t true. I want to promote love, but I also believe that love must be honest and protective of young girls in sports, allowing them to compete without facing biological males.”
