Reporter Imagines Somalis Harming Americans While Looking Into Daycare Fraud

A top legal reporter from Politico.com suggested on Tuesday that individuals who approach businesses could potentially face severe consequences.

Josh Gerstein, who holds the title of “senior legal reporter,” mentioned that “amateur attempts to knock on the door of a home daycare center may eventually clash with strong self-defense laws.”

This remark seemed to target Nick Shirley, an independent journalist who has stirred considerable attention regarding allegations of vast fraud and corruption among Somali business owners in Minnesota. While many mainstream outlets, including Politico, seem to overlook or trivialize this issue, Shirley’s report garnered significant traction online, receiving over 100 million views.

Amid a barrage of about 10,000 negative comments, Gerstein responded by stating, “Noting that something might happen or that there’s a serious risk doesn’t mean I’m advocating for it.”

The White House’s RapidResponse47 account labeled Gerstein a “disease.” In response, political activist Chris Rufo questioned the implications, saying, “Hey, politicians, go after the individual promoting violence towards journalists.” He added, “Can you believe someone would assert that if you approach a legitimate business during operating hours and express interest, you could end up shot?”

This backlash against Gerstein isn’t entirely unexpected. Since Trump’s election in 2016, a wave of threats has emerged from some progressives against mainstream America, which seem to have escalated; notably, conservative figure Charlie Kirk was killed by a sniper in September.

Politico, a well-known establishment media organization based in Washington, D.C., is owned by the German company Axel Springer SE, which is also recognized as pro-establishment.

Tennessee Congressman Jeremy Faison reacted, questioning whether Politico is endorsing violence against reporters simply doing their jobs. Similarly, Fox News columnist David Marcus expressed disbelief, asking if Gerstein was really suggesting that Somali business owners should shoot amateur reporters at their doors. U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement also criticized Gerstein’s tweet, implying a lack of judgment in inciting violence against federal employees.
