President Trump knows the symbolic words that Thomas Matthew Crooks of Butler, Pennsylvania, yelled to the crowd on July 13, 2024 after being shot in the ear. But what was he saying, as he was lying on the ground, in the seconds between Shot and his rallying cry?
Reporter Salena Jeet, who was with President Trump of Butler, Pennsylvania that day, has the answer to that question.

When President Trump was on the ground, protected by members of the Secret Service, Jeet says he can “see him.”
“He says America twice…and I see him turn around and say, 'Fight, fight, fight, fight, fight, fight,'” she tells Glenn.
In a later phone call with President Trump, Jeet asked why he said those words.
“And he said, “Well, Serena, at that moment, I wasn't Donald Trump. I wasn't president yet, but I wasn't president yet… I had an obligation to show that the country is strong and that we will not be defeated, and that we are determined.”
“You're bringing me to tears,” says Glenn, who had a similar conversation with President Trump.
Such bold strength, “whether you're inside you or not, it's a very small number of people,” he says.
Glenn then points out that many world leaders have experienced assassination attempts, but their narrow escapes usually make them “selfish.” Meanwhile, Trump was “humble… still reinforced” by his experience of death. Again, he gave God credit to save his life.
Zito says he truly believes that God's intervention is the reason why he lives today. The speed at which his administration is operating and the determination that characterizes his policy decisions stems from the belief that God saved his life for his purposes – its purpose is to “save this country.”
But Trump wasn't the only one who felt the presence of the Lord that day. Zito says that the people in Butler's crowd, who remained mysteriously calm despite the horror they witnessed, reported that when their leader was almost killed, “we felt the presence of something greater than our self at that moment.”
