Question at MLB Press Conference Raises Eyebrows
During a recent press conference, a left-leaning reporter sparked some controversy by questioning Los Angeles Dodgers Manager Dave Roberts about the return of the Major League Baseball (MLB) All-Star game to Atlanta. This decision comes after the league pulled the game from the city in 2021 due to concerns over a Georgia voting law.
The MLB had initially removed the Atlanta Braves and Truist Park from hosting the 2021 All-Star game in response to Georgia’s Election Integrity Act. Now, the event is scheduled to return in 2025. The reporter, allegedly Jen Ramos Eisen from the website “Defector,” pressed Roberts on how he felt participating in the game given that the law still stands.
Pat McAfee, the event’s host for ESPN, asked Eisen to repeat her question. She claimed it was “dangerous” for journalists in Atlanta due to high rates of detentions by ICE. McAfee, seemingly taken aback, attempted to redirect the conversation, acknowledging it’s a “political” issue and expressing excitement about being back in Atlanta.
Before moving on, McAfee mentioned that he didn’t believe any MLB officials present served as lobbyists. Roberts then shared his thoughts, stating, “I think Pat answered it perfectly and honestly. I feel excited to be here. This is a great city … But right now, I choose to focus on the players and the game.”
In context, the Election Integrity Act faced strong criticism. In 2021, former President Joe Biden condemned the law, describing it as “Jim Crow in the 21st century” and asserting it suppressed black voting rights. Changes in the law included stricter absentee ballot requirements and limits on ballot drop boxes, along with prohibiting volunteers from giving water to those waiting to vote.
Moreover, Eisen probed Roberts about his comments related to MLB Network’s #StopAsianHate initiative, seemingly linking those comments to the criticisms of the Georgia law. She also emphasized the supposed danger of reporting in Atlanta, citing the case of journalist Mario Guevara, who was detained by ICE, although local authorities later dropped the charges against him.
This incident illustrates the lengths some journalists may go to push a specific agenda. Questioning a baseball manager about unrelated issues and suggesting that law enforcement posed a threat to reporters during a sports event press conference feels rather misplaced.
The All-Star event allows fans to vote for starting players, highlighting the talent in professional baseball. In this context, Eisen’s question appeared quite unprofessional and out of place.
