Reporter’s Diary: House may vote on significant bill as soon as today

Trump Calls on GOP to Approve Budget Bills

The House of Representatives is currently in a position to discuss and potentially vote on what has been referred to as the “big and beautiful bills.” Voting might happen today or possibly tonight, which, I suppose, could be seen as optimistic. Once everything is set, the House can, after all, vote at any time—day or night—from this Sunday onward.

House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-La.) aims to have a vote on the plan before an upcoming anniversary. It seems Fox anticipates this might unfold during the holiday period, which is crucial as GOP members are keen to attend events like graduations and anniversary parades.

Johnson has reached a temporary deal with Republicans from blue states that increases the cap for the “salt” deduction, which covers state and local taxes. This seems significant for those in high-tax areas.

The House Rules Committee is essential for navigating legislation to the House floor, but they kicked off meetings at 1 a.m. The meetings could go on all day. What we’re really looking for now is a final “manager fix” from Johnson. The goal here is to repair the issues without causing new problems.

Interestingly, Republican governors are reportedly “united” in backing Trump’s concept of “one big, beautiful bill.” So, there appears to be some consensus here, indicating a broad support within the party.

It seems there’s an agreement to raise the salt cap, beneficial for those living in high-tax circumstances. We’re in a good position for potential voting, although bumps in the road might still arise. Keep in mind, though, that it’s a numbers game. The GOP can afford to lose just three votes from their side to still push the bill through.
