Momentum is growing for Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton as he challenges longtime Senator John Cornyn (R-Texas). Recently, Rep. Burgess Owens (R-Utah) has come out in support of Paxton, according to exclusive information from Breitbart News.
In a statement shared with Breitbart News, Owens reflected on his family history, noting that his great-grandfather escaped slavery via the Underground Railroad and settled in Smithville, Texas, where he bought 102 acres to pursue the American Dream. “Texas has always been a refuge for those seeking freedom. Ken Paxton has exemplified that spirit as Attorney General, and we need him in the Senate now. The radical left has targeted Texas for too long, and bold leadership is essential to counter that. I’m proud to back Ken Paxton for the U.S. Senate alongside many of my colleagues,” he said.
As Paxton’s backing swells ahead of the May primary runoff against Cornyn, he adds to a lineup of supporters that includes Rep. Brandon Gill (R-Texas), who endorsed Paxton last week in another exclusive for Breitbart News.
“Implementing President Trump’s policies will need significant changes in the Senate, and electing Ken Paxton is a strong first step. He is a seasoned conservative who came out of a politicized impeachment trial even stronger,” Gill stated in his op-ed for Breitbart News. “For years, he’s been at the forefront fighting for President Trump, opposing the Islamization of Texas, fighting against open borders, and resisting the extreme elements of the Democratic Party. He’s a warrior, ready to support the president in the Senate—exactly what Texas needs. While Paxton is in a competitive race against four-term incumbent John Cornyn, well-known in Texas, voters are eager for change and want a senator dedicated to fighting against the left.”
Cornyn’s campaign appears to be losing steam as the primary approaches and moves into the runoff. National party committees and outside groups have reportedly distanced themselves from Cornyn, especially after polls suggest Paxton holds a significant lead. Initially, President Donald Trump seemed poised to endorse Cornyn following the primary, but his stance has noticeably shifted after revelations regarding Cornyn’s support for measures against Trump as well as some senior officials promoting those initiatives.
Videos featuring Cornyn alongside figures like Joe Biden’s Deputy Attorney General Lisa Monaco, Attorney General Merrick Garland, Special Counsel Jack Smith, and former FBI Directors James Comey and Robert Mueller, who backed the Russia disinformation narrative, have weakened Cornyn’s assertion of supporting the president. Plus, Paxton has succeeded in tying his campaign to the Save America Act, a voter ID proposal currently under consideration in the Senate with outdated regulations that Cornyn has historically backed.
