President Trump Demands Iran Reopen Strait of Hormuz in 48 Hours

President Donald Trump has set a 48-hour ultimatum for Iran, insisting that the country completely reopen the Strait of Hormuz or face severe military action targeting Iranian power plants. This escalation follows Iran’s recent launch of a long-range missile capable of reaching Europe, which has heightened tensions in the Middle East and pushed Brent crude oil prices up to $112.19. In response, the Pentagon is requesting $200 billion for Operation Epic Fury to protect essential waterways against Iranian threats.

Rep. Mike Turner (R-Ohio) stated he doesn’t think it’s “necessary” to deploy Iranian ground forces to reopen the vital trade route that has been obstructed by Iranian forces for over a month. He shared these views during an appearance on ABC’s “This Week with George Stephanopoulos,” not long after Trump had threatened to “open the F—– Straits” and warned Iran to comply or “live in hell.”

When asked if the Strait could be opened without military action, Turner avoided a direct answer. Instead, he spoke generally about the conflict, suggesting that Trump’s military efforts were effectively neutralizing Iran’s ambitions to develop nuclear capabilities, something he felt the previous administration had neglected.

He remarked, “If we stood back and watched, as the Obama administration tried to do, while Iran became a nuclear power and became North Korea, we wouldn’t be looking at the Strait of Hormuz.”

After further questioning from Stephanopoulos about deploying ground troops, Turner mentioned that he thinks the conflict will evolve and doesn’t foresee the need for U.S. ground forces to engage directly. He emphasized that the current situation involves ongoing cooperation between the U.S. and Israel to diminish Iran’s military, including its naval and missile capabilities.

In a follow-up post on Truth Social, Trump specified a deadline of “8pm ET Tuesday” for Iran to reopen the Strait. He also called upon European nations for assistance in this endeavor in his subsequent address to the public.

Although the U.S. imports a minimal amount of oil via the Strait of Hormuz, any disruption could significantly impact global supply chains, particularly given that the average gasoline price in the U.S. has already surged past $4 a gallon since the conflict escalated. Turner was contacted for additional insights into the situation.
