Rep. Ilhan Omar (D-MN) and Rep. Cori Bush (D-MO) appeared to confuse Memorial Day with Veterans Day in a since-deleted post on X (formerly Twitter).
On Monday morning, two “Squad” members posted a similar message on X to coincide with the federal holiday honoring and commemorating U.S. military members who have lost their lives serving their country.
“On Memorial Day, we honor the heroic men and women who served our country,” Omar wrote in multiple screenshots of the post before it was removed. “We owe them more than a thank you. They are well within their rights to quality mental health services, employment opportunities, housing assistance and the benefits they were promised.”

President Bush’s post echoed the sentiment: “This Memorial Day, and every day, we honor St. Louis’ veterans. To build a world free of war and violence, we must invest in universal health care for veterans, affordable housing, comprehensive mental health services, education and economic opportunity.”
Social media users were quick to point out that the congresswomen’s message seemed to confuse the meaning of the holiday with Veterans Day, another federal holiday that is celebrated annually on November 11th to honor surviving veterans of the United States military.

“Ilhan Omar is so right about misunderstanding Memorial Day,” Townhall’s John Hasson posted.
“Ilhan Omar believes Memorial Day is a day to honor the living. This is beyond parody,” Outkick’s David Hookstead wrote, adding that the post has since been deleted, “but screenshots are forever.”

Veterans Day in November is a day to honor all those who served in the U.S. military and is primarily intended to thank surviving veterans,” Ryan Saavedra said along with a screenshot of Bush’s message.

Both Omar and Bush deleted their posts within hours.
Bush posted an amended message saying, “On this #MemorialDay, we honor those who lost their lives in service to our country and remember the loved ones they left behind. We must continue our efforts to protect our service members as we work to build a world free of war and violence.”
Omar’s official congressional account did not post a replacement tweet, but her personal account wrote, “On Memorial Day, let us thank the brave men and women who dedicated their lives to our country. We also thank the families who gave their sacrifices and time to ensure their loved ones are remembered.”
