Lawmakers Warn of Rising Tensions Around Taiwan

Bipartisan members of the Select Committee on China expressed concerns on Tuesday regarding the escalating tensions provoked by the Chinese government, particularly focusing on military activities near Taiwan. They indicated that Congress is closely monitoring these developments.

In a joint statement, Rep. John Moolener (R-Mich.) and Rep. Raja Krishnamoorthi (Ill.) described the People’s Liberation Army’s recent live-fire exercises around Taiwan as a “deliberate escalation.” They noted that these actions appear designed to intimidate not just Taiwan but other democracies in the area, threatening peace and stability throughout the Indo-Pacific region.

During a two-day military demonstration, China has reportedly fired rockets into international waters surrounding Taiwan and deployed various military assets, including amphibious assault ships and bombers, to the region. These maneuvers have raised alarms, as they come amidst a suspension of international flights and broader exercises encircling Taiwan.

This is not the first instance of Beijing engaging in military activities around Taiwan, a territory it claims as its own. President Donald Trump remarked recently that he is not particularly worried about China’s assertiveness, citing a positive relationship with Chinese President Xi Jinping and noting that such military exercises have been ongoing for around two decades.

Lawmakers underscored that China’s military posturing is indicative of its desire to extend the influence of the Chinese Communist Party beyond its borders. They warned that through coercive tactics and military rehearsals, China aims to reshape regional dynamics through intimidation.

The committee members reaffirmed their commitment to supporting Taiwan, emphasizing that the United States stands firmly alongside Taiwan and aligns with other democratic nations in efforts to ensure a secure, free, and stable Indo-Pacific region.
