Seventy-four members of the House of Representatives sent a letter to Speaker Mike Johnson (R) on Wednesday urging him to refuse to reauthorize the Undetectable Firearms Act of 1988.
The letter, which was supported by American gun owners, began by saying:
As we head into the 2024 election year, the Republican conference will have many opportunities to prove to the American people why our party should be entrusted with continued control of the House of Representatives. One of the first opportunities for Republicans to demonstrate their commitment to America will be a firm refusal to permanently reauthorize or expand undetectable firearms laws.
The letter goes on to say that the continuation of the Undetectable Firearms Act would allow the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) to redefine words and phrases that would limit the number of guns regulated under the law. It is pointed out that there is a possibility of expansion.

Rep. 74 specifically noted how the ATF redefined an incomplete pistol frame as a firearm. On December 27, 2022, the ATF issued a letter reiterating that “partially completed pistol frames” are “firearms.”
The ATF’s redefinition of gun parts is an outgrowth of Biden’s call for action on firearms that Democrats classify as “ghost guns.” The new definition is now part of ATF Final Rule 2021-05F.
The 74 senators added: “The Biden administration has already demonstrated its ability to arm the Undetectable Firearms Act with a broad ban on plastic guns.” Congress must not permanently reauthorize this law, especially while the ATF’s final definition of “frame or receiver” is still being considered in court. ”
