Several Republican lawmakers are pushing for proposals to ban the purchase of unhealthy foods through the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) to support low-income families.
Sweet soda is in the crosshairs with three separate proposals, but the two bills go further by banning the purchase of other junk foods.
R-Texas's Keith Self will have zero funding for the 2025 Zero Nutrition Options (Fizz-No) Act, blocking the purchase of sodas with SNAP benefits. The text defines soda as “a carbonated drink containing at least one gram of added sugar, artificial sweeteners, or flavors per serving.”
Three House Republicans are listed as co-hosts of congress.gov.
“Allowing taxpayer dollars to subsidize sweet sodas that provide zero nutritional value and contribute to costly health is counterproductive. The Fizznoe Act is a common-sense solution to strengthen public health and reduce the financial burden on taxpayers.”
Senator Randpole, R-KY. submitted measures to implement a wider ban on purchasing junk food with the benefits of snaps.

With the 2025 nutritious snap method, Kibosch will purchase “kibosch” to purchase snaps of “milk, soy milk, coconut milk, drinks absorbed in water, milk, milk, milk, etc.), or 100% juices, “milk, soy milk, coconut milk, etc.), “milk, soy milk, coconut milk, etc.), as described in “snacks and desert foods” in “snacks and desert foods” in “milk, soy milk, coconut milk, etc.), “milk, soy milk, coconut milk, etc.).
That list includes a variety of items such as potato chips, corn chips, pretzels, donuts, cookies, ice cream and more.
“It makes no sense that taxpayer dollars are being used to fund obesity and diet-related disease outbreaks in low-income communities. My bill ensures that this assistance program actually supports health and wellbeing, not chronic illness,” Paul said.

A group of GOP lawmakers in both rooms on both Assembly are promoting the 2025 Healthy Snap Act.
The measure targets “prepared desserts such as soft drinks, candies, ice cream, cakes, pies, cookies or similar products,” and invites agricultural secretaries to “scientific reviews” of foods permitted at least every five years.
Senator Mike Lee, R-utah and other Republican senators are pushing the bill in the Senate, but R-OK. Rep. Josh Bretzin, and many other House Republicans, are pushing it in the House.

“U.S. taxes should not be used to risk junk food payments or the health of the most vulnerable Americans,” Lee said in a press release. “The fastest way to make America healthy again is to encourage a balanced diet and stop supporting unhealthy food choices. Healthy snapping methods are a solid step towards building a society where all families can enjoy strength, health and good nutrition.”
