Republican Attacks on Tim Walz Are ‘Despicable’

Sen. Tammy Duckworth, D-Ill., said Sunday on ABC’s “This Week” that Republican criticism of Gov. Tim Walz, D-Minn.,’s military record is “despicable.”

A partial transcript follows:

MARTHA RADDATZ: You’re talking about Tim Waltz, and there’s also been controversy over his military service. He once said he carried a weapon in a war, when in fact he didn’t. He said he misspoke. But ABC News found at least one instance where Waltz didn’t correct someone he interviewed that he’d served in Afghanistan.

Is there anything wrong with that? Should he have corrected him?

DUCKWORTH: Well, you know, when we talk, we often say a lot of different things. But let’s not forget that this man served in uniform for 24 years. He’s a retired master sergeant. I’m pleased to have a retired master sergeant in the Situation Room in the Office of the Vice President as we look at issues of conflict around the world. It’s a wonderful thing to have that experience.

And frankly, what the Republican Party is doing is despicable. They are the same party that thinks that Donald Trump, a five-time draft dodger who thinks veterans are idiots and losers, is superior to someone who served in uniform for 24 years and protected and defended us every day.

And frankly, I have no problem with Tim Waltz, in fact, I think with his extensive military experience, he would be a very good person for America to have in the Situation Room.
