Republican lawmakers seek answers from WNBA Commissioner regarding unfair treatment of basketball star Caitlin Clark

Congressional Pressure on WNBA Over Player Safety

A faction of Republican lawmakers, headed by Texas Representative August Pfluger, has formally urged WNBA Commissioner Cathy Engelbert to take action against repeated violent incidents targeting Caitlin Clark, a standout player for the Indiana Fever.

In a letter dispatched on Wednesday, eleven Republican members of Congress cautioned the league that if it fails to adequately manage aggressive behavior toward Clark, who is 24, they might face federal oversight or civil rights investigations.

This political move comes in response to recent highly publicized incidents during games, including a flagrant foul that resulted in Clark being hit in the neck. The lawmakers asserted that Clark plays a pivotal role in the sport’s cultural and economic landscape, while accusing the WNBA of neglecting essential safety measures for one of its most recognized athletes.

“Caitlin Clark is transforming women’s sports. She has inspired a new generation of young girls to participate in athletics and has become one of the most influential figures in the history of women’s basketball. She is also the face of your league… Clark has been hip-checked, poked in the eye, and struck in the throat during games. These incidents go far beyond routine physical play, yet the WNBA and its officiating have too often failed to address these unacceptable incidents and hold players accountable,” Chairman Pfluger noted in the letter.

This congressional letter raises the stakes, suggesting that federal intervention could follow if the WNBA does not respond satisfactorily by the July 24th deadline. The GOP members referenced federal laws concerning a hostile work environment as a potential route for legal action.

“As Commissioner, you have an obligation to ensure that every player competes in a safe and professional environment, both on and off the court, free from violence, discrimination, or retaliation,” the lawmakers wrote. “If discrimination or retaliation is occurring and creating a hostile work environment, we support any appropriate investigation by the Department of Justice, the Department of Labor, or the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission. If true, such conduct could constitute violations of federal civil rights laws.”

Several lawmakers also shared personal comments criticizing the league’s management and insisting on urgent reforms to rules and disciplinary measures.

Representative Marlin Stutzman (R-Ind.) stressed Clark’s vital role in the WNBA, stating, “If it were not for Caitlin Clark, the WNBA would still be irrelevant and possibly even defunct. Caitlin, and every player, deserves to know that when they walk on the court, they are protected from unnecessary physical hostility and violence. Commissioner Engelbert is responsible for the safety of the women in her league; she should act swiftly to keep them all protected from violence.”

Representative Tim Burchett (R-Tenn.) reinforced these sentiments, adding, “Discrimination of any kind has no place in women’s sports. The WNBA’s failure to act on these concerning incidents shows an indifference, or active disregard, for civil rights protections. I look forward to receiving answers from Commissioner Engelbert.”

Increased political scrutiny comes about a week after Clark expressed her frustrations regarding player safety, particularly after an incident involving Phoenix Mercury forward Alyssa Thomas, who received a flagrant-2 foul and a one-game suspension for dangerously contacting Clark’s neck.

Speaking to the press, Clark stated, “I think for us, the leagues just got to do better protecting our players.”

While the Indiana Fever organization claimed they were previously unaware of the congressional letter, some signatories like Representative Victoria Spartz (R-Ind.) emphasized that the league must prioritize athlete safety, noting, “The WNBA has a responsibility to ensure every player competes in a fair and safe environment, and its actions—not just its words—must reflect that.”
