Government Shutdown Press Conference by GOP Leaders
House Speaker Mike Johnson and Senate Majority Leader John Thune conducted a press conference alongside other Republican leaders following the government shutdown.
This event occurred on Wednesday morning after a failure to finalize a funding agreement between the two parties. The Senate had turned down a Republican suspension bill that had passed in the House.
“The Democrats have indeed acted on their threat to shut down the government,” Johnson stated. “This morning, hundreds of thousands of federal workers are affected. Nearly half of private-sector workers have been sent home. These are diligent Americans employed by the federal government.”
He added, “Thankfully, President Trump is attempting to mitigate the fallout. His administration is working to minimize harm to the American populace. But, as this situation drags on, more suffering seems unavoidable.”
Another Republican remarked that “Schumer’s shutdown” was something that could have been avoided entirely.
Johnson asserted, “There’s really nothing new in this scenario. The only variation is the individual in the Oval Office. Rather than collaborating with President Trump and Republicans, the Democrats seem to be engaged in political games that affect American lives.”
Thune highlighted that Democrats could have cooperated in a bipartisan manner to prevent the current shutdown, which they found quite surprising.
While promoting a 24-page funding bill that had successfully passed in the House, Thune asked, “Does this look partisan? Does this seem questionable to you? It’s just 24 pages dedicated to funding the government.”
Both Johnson and Thune recounted previous instances where Democrats had passed laws to avert impending shutdowns.
“They’ve held the American people hostage, believing it would politically benefit them,” Thune remarked, referring to Chuck Schumer and the other Democrats who voted for the shutdown.
Thune also commented on social media, expressing hope regarding a resolution. “Democrats decided to close the government tonight, but they could certainly reopen it tomorrow. We just need five Democrats to join us and pass the straightforward funding bill right here.”
