West Virginia Lawmaker Rescues Firearms at Church Event

A West Virginia politician intervened during the “Guns to Gardens” event on May 2, which took place at a local fire station, successfully saving several firearms that were set to be destroyed.

For years, advocates for gun buybacks have attempted to convince individuals to surrender their firearms for modest gift card amounts, often far below the actual worth of the guns. Del. Chris Anders, a Republican from West Virginia, commented on the situation at the church, pointing out that the buyback was organized with the involvement of Federally Licensed Firearms Dealers, who adhered to all relevant laws, including the National Firearms Act, and offered better deals to those wishing to turn in their firearms.

The event offered gift cards up to $200 based on the types of firearms surrendered, specifically ranging from $50 for handguns to $200 for more modern semi-automatics, as reported by the Hagerstown Herald Mail. This kind of event is often sponsored by various groups, including state and local governments, churches, and nonprofits, aimed at encouraging people to hand over their guns for destruction in exchange for gift cards.

According to the Herald Mail, the firearms collected during this event were not merely dismantled but repurposed into artwork and gardening tools right on the scene.

They aimed to destroy firearms in Shepherdstown today. We stepped in and rescued them. Instead of watching perfectly good guns get chopped up, we bought them. Today, we’re not just discussing the Second Amendment; we defended it, one gun at a time.

Anders described their actions as “peaceful, legal, transparent, and rooted in freedom.” Among the firearms saved was a collectible Colt revolver, valued in the hundreds, that was nearly exchanged for just a $50 gift card.

He mentioned that they managed to save 60 guns from destruction, which was more than double the count from previous events. A post from the church claimed that the majority of participants opted for alternatives rather than surrendering their firearms.

This church described itself as inclusive and progressive, emphasizing its commitment to LGBTQIA+ inclusivity alongside its history. They often displayed a Pride flag at the event, reinforcing their progressive stance.

The West Virginia Caucus for Freedom issued a statement mentioning that law enforcement was called by Second Amendment counter-protesters to ensure that Anders and others offering cash were acting within legal boundaries.

The church explained that the “Guns to Gardens” initiative acknowledges Second Amendment rights, not just the right to purchase firearms but also the right to dispose of them. They clarified that participation is entirely voluntary, often motivated by practical concerns, personal grief, or religious beliefs.

Anders encouraged others to take part in similar counter-events wherever buybacks occur, stressing the importance of adhering to legal regulations, even if individuals view them as overly restrictive of Second Amendment rights. He asserted that firearms themselves are not inherently evil, as the true issues lie with violent crimes, mental health challenges, and a cultural decline.

Lastly, Anders expressed concern that demolishing firearms implies a willingness to sacrifice freedom instead of safeguarding it. He believes that the way to combat violence is not by infringing on the rights of law-abiding citizens.
