Rep. Darrell Issa (R-Calif.) said Monday that he was nominating President Trump for the Nobel Peace Prize.
“Today, I'm nominating @RealdonaldTrump for the Nobel Peace Prize,” Issa wrote in X's post. “No one deserves it.”
Issa did not specify in his post why he nominated the president.
However, in a subsequent statement, an Issa spokesman pointed to Trump's peace efforts in the Middle East.
“Rep. Issa recently led Cordell [Congressional delegation] To the four Middle Eastern countries – he observed directly and from several heads of state that separating from peace and conflict is realistic and multilateral,” Jonathan Wilcox, Issa's vice-chief of staff and director of communications, said in a statement to Hill.
“From the time of his election and after being sworn in, President Trump urged and promoted the cause of peace, and in a way that we haven't heard in many years,” Wilcox continued.
“His defense is a world of war-free aspirations, and we see this focused in some parts of the world today.
The announcement comes as Trump has reinstated US policies regarding the Ukrainian War and has thawed relations with Russian President Vladimir Putin, while increasing pressure on Ukrainian leader Voldymir Zelensky.
Trump has been nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize many times in the past, but has never won a coveted award.
Rep. Claudia Tenney (RN.Y.) said in January 2024 that she nominated Trump in his role in mediating the historic Abraham agreement during her first term.
Some observers speculate that Trump is seeking a peace deal between Russia and Ukraine, so in part he could get another chance at the Nobel Peace Prize.
Just last weekend, Secretary of State Marco Rubio defended Trump's approach to brokering transactions between Russia and Ukraine, saying, “Any Democrat who was doing this, everyone would say, 'Well, he's heading for the Nobel Peace Prize.'
In February 2019, Prime Minister Trump allegedly nominated him to the Nobel Peace Prize for his efforts to reach a peace agreement with North Korea.
