Republican Senators Call for Investigation into Obama’s Role in Russia Probe

On Thursday, two high-ranking Republican senators urged the Justice Department to appoint special advisers to investigate new claims regarding the Obama administration’s involvement in the Russian investigation that overshadowed Trump’s first term.

Senators Lindsey Graham (R-SC) and John Cornyn (R-TX) requested an independent inquiry into whether former President Obama or his senior officials “used the national security apparatus for political purposes.”

This public plea followed the DOJ’s establishment of a “Strike Force,” which is currently examining recently declassified intelligence details shared by former Congresswoman Tulsi Gabbard.

“Bringing in a special advisor would serve the nation significantly,” Graham and Cornyn stated in a joint announcement. The senators emphasized that, according to the information available, it appears the entire narrative of Russian collusion was orchestrated by the Obama administration, undermining the will of the American public.

The DOJ’s “Strike Force” is considering its next steps after Gabbard alleged that the Obama administration manipulated and enhanced the narrative around Russian interference in the 2016 election.

In October 2020, during Trump’s presidency, the then U.S. Attorney John Durham was assigned to investigate the origins of the FBI’s inquiry into suspected links between Trump’s campaign and Russia. Durham concluded his investigation in 2023, revealing that the FBI’s findings presented significant flaws and lacked credible evidence.

According to Durham, “The FBI dismissed or purposefully overlooked information that contradicted the theory of a collusion between Trump and Russia,” while acknowledging questions about whether the FBI was influenced for political reasons.

Now, Graham and Cornyn are advocating for a new special advisor to probe further into the activities of the Obama administration’s intelligence community regarding Russian interference in the election.

Graham publicly called on Attorney General Bondy to appoint the advisor to investigate how Obama and his team may have utilized national security resources for political gain.

Recently, Gabbard made public some previously classified documents suggesting that the Obama administration initially doubted that Russia had hacked into U.S. voting systems, a stance they changed after Trump’s election victory over Hillary Clinton.

Gabbard’s released material included findings from a 2020 House Intelligence Committee Report that indicated Russian leader Vladimir Putin aimed to undermine trust in U.S. democratic processes rather than intentionally supporting Trump’s campaign, contradicting the popular narrative of Kremlin interference favoring Trump.

Although critics argue that a 2020 Senate Intelligence report endorsed the idea that Putin favored Trump, Gabbard has accused the Obama administration of orchestrating schemes to destabilize Trump’s presidency.

A representative for Obama stated this week that the information recently disclosed by Gabbard didn’t change anything. They pointed out that the conclusions were reconfirmed in the Senate Intelligence Committee’s 2020 report, led by then-chairman Marco Rubio.
