Republican Suggests Taking Away L.A.'s 2028 Olympics Due to Anti-ICE Protests

Los Angeles Olympics in Question Amid Protests

Republican Senator Bernie Moreno from Ohio has suggested that Los Angeles might lose the privilege of hosting the 2028 Olympics, citing ongoing anti-ICE protests as a significant concern.

Moreno voiced worries about the city’s ability to manage security, saying, “I think we might not even be able to host the FIFA World Cup in 2026 due to the violence and unrest.” He argued that a more law-abiding environment is essential for American citizens and the millions who would visit for these events.

In contrast, LA2028 CEO Reynold H. Hoover defended the city’s ability to host, claiming that it would showcase the best of America during the Olympics.

Oklahoma Senator James Lankford noted President Trump’s backing for the Olympics to be hosted in the U.S. and emphasized the country’s commitment. “We intend to continue to welcome the world to the United States,” Lankford stated.

Reports indicate that violent anti-ICE demonstrations erupted in Los Angeles recently, triggered by federal immigration actions. Protesters reportedly hurled eggs and shouted warnings about impending raids. Video footage captured law enforcement officers managing the situation while some protesters blocked roads and vandalized police vehicles, even setting a car ablaze.

On Friday, more than 40 arrests were made amid enforcement of a search warrant, causing outrage among local officials and immigration advocates.

In light of the chaos, President Trump authorized the deployment of 4,000 National Guard troops to assist ICE agents in the operation. Additionally, hundreds of U.S. Marines were sent to maintain order, a move that Democrats criticized as an unnecessary escalation.

“The federal government has taken over the California State Guard and deployed 2,000 soldiers in Los Angeles, not because there is a lack of law enforcement, but because they want spectacles,” one critic remarked.
