As the standoff regarding the Department of Homeland Security continues into its sixth week, there’s growing restlessness among Americans and airlines alike, pushing Congress to resolve the situation.
Delta Air Lines recently made a notable move: it has suspended certain privileges for members of Congress until the DHS reopens and TSA employees begin receiving their paychecks. These perks included expedited security lanes and special phone numbers that provided additional support for lawmakers and their teams.
“I’m stuck in line like everyone else,” one frustrated traveler remarked.
With no end in sight for the DHS shutdown, Republican Representative Mark Alford from Missouri defended the additional privileges received by Congress during a press event.
“These were set up due to the irregular scheduling we have,” Alford explained during an interview. “It’s often unpredictable when I’ll need to leave right after voting to return to my district and see my family.”
Though Alford stood firm in support of the services, he acknowledged concerns about members of Congress utilizing TSA shortcuts and bypassing security, particularly amid the ongoing shutdown.
“I wouldn’t take advantage of that myself,” he stated. “I’m waiting in line like everyone else, and I believe people are beginning to see that we’re representatives for our communities.”
Alford emphasized that these services primarily exist to assist members fulfill their roles, not for personal enjoyment. “We need to serve the 550,000 constituents we represent, and some of us rely on these services regularly.”
He also made a fiscal argument, stating that these benefits could ultimately help conserve taxpayer resources. “We receive discounts for Congressional travel because it involves taxpayer money, and that’s one reason these services are beneficial.”
He reiterated, “These practices are there to assist us in doing our jobs, not for some kind of luxury.”
