Lawrence, Massachusetts, Mayor Brian DePeña is facing federal fraud charges in connection with COVID-19 pandemic loan misuse. Fox News contributor Raymond Arroyo discussed this issue with Laura Ingraham on ‘The Ingraham Angle,’ which also covered Angie Nixon’s defense of drag performances and Rosie O’Donnell’s recent criticisms of Trump.
A late-night vehicle accident has thrown a Massachusetts Republican’s statewide campaign into jeopardy right before the elections.
Shawn Oliver, aged 42 and currently a New Bedford city councilor, has suspended his campaign as the Republican nominee for lieutenant governor. This decision followed his arrest after a rollover accident involving five parked cars, as confirmed by police to Fox News Digital.
Police reported that they responded to the incident on Dartmouth Street around 11:40 p.m. Saturday, where Oliver’s vehicle had overturned after colliding with multiple parked vehicles. Two of these cars were seriously damaged.
Oliver, named as the driver, was taken to St. Luke’s Hospital for minor injuries.
After investigating the scene and the hospital, officers charged Oliver with driving under the influence, negligent driving, lane violations, and speeding.
Mike Minogue, the Republican nominee for governor, publicly urged Oliver to step down from his campaign. He expressed disappointment and remarked that Oliver was fortunate to be unharmed and to have not caused injury to others. He stated, “There is no excuse for driving under the influence.”
Minogue, who has a background in business and military service and is challenging Democratic Governor Maura Healey, indicated he had a discussion with Oliver prior to calling for his suspension.
He further stated, “After speaking with Shawn, I am asking him to suspend his campaign immediately, and when elected, I will formally ask for his resignation.”
Oliver acknowledged his campaign suspension on X, mentioning that “the election is too important to be overshadowed by personal matters.” He was involved in the crash in New Bedford’s South End.
New Bedford Mayor Jon Mitchell released a statement expressing his concern over the incident. He praised the police for their swift response and noted relief that there were no serious injuries. Furthermore, he called for Oliver to publicly address the matter.
Minogue emphasized the importance of Oliver focusing on his family and urged him to take steps to avoid future incidents, offering any support he might need. He also took the opportunity to criticize his Democratic opponent, stating that accountability is lacking under Governor Healey’s leadership.
The Massachusetts Department of Correction confirmed that Oliver, also a city councilor employed by them, has been assigned to restricted duty following his arrest.
This campaign suspension is particularly significant as it comes just weeks before the November elections, with Minogue opposing Healey and the incumbent Democratic Lt. Gov. Kim Driscoll seeking re-election.
