House Rules Committee Meets on Trump’s Budget Bill
The House Rules Committee gathered at 1 a.m. on Wednesday, where they criticized Republicans for pushing the significant budget bill at such a late hour. This follows developments indicating the GOP’s intention to advance President Trump’s much-touted budget proposal.
Earlier in the week, the House Budget Committee reached a consensus to forward the bill to the Rules Committee late on a Sunday night. After deliberations concluded around 10 p.m., it became necessary for the Rules Committee to establish rules for discussion and markup, which are expected soon in the Republican-led House.
Not long after, the House Budget Committee voted to approve the bill. The Rules Committee announced that they would review this substantial legislation early Wednesday. This late-night move elicited backlash from Democrats, who claimed the Republicans were attempting to sidestep scrutiny following the previous night’s vote.
“Republicans have scheduled an evening vote on Trump’s ‘big and beautiful bill.’ They advanced it at 10:30 p.m. last night,” remarked Senator Elizabeth Warren. “Maybe this bill will take healthcare from babies, new mothers, and older adults.”
Recent projections suggest positive outcomes for families and workers concerning Trump’s budget plan.
Legislative talks surrounding the GOP budget have focused on potential cuts to federal programs, including Medicaid, as a means to extend tax reductions initially introduced during Trump’s first term. Democrats have vocally opposed these proposed cuts, portraying them as detrimental to public health initiatives essential for those in need.
Democrat minority leader Hakeem Jeffries condemned the budget proposals, stating, “Republicans understand that their efforts to deprive millions of Americans of healthcare are deeply unpopular. They are literally taking food from the mouths of children, veterans, and seniors in what may be the largest cut in American history. The trillion-dollar deficits are exceedingly unpopular.” He further critiqued Republicans for pushing the bill through during late-night sessions.
As Republicans work to finalize the budget before an approaching deadline, it appears they are hastening the process. To adhere to their timeline, the House Rules Committee will convene early Wednesday morning.
According to the rules, Democrats will have two calendar days to view the proposed changes after the previous night’s markup. Concerns about how the GOP is handling the budget discussions have been raised, especially regarding transparency and public visibility.
The urgency surrounding the budget bill has fueled accusations of rushed processes, as Republicans seek to push through significant cuts, particularly in health programs like Medicaid and SNAP. Democrats emphasize the irony in Republicans’ previous stances against late-night sessions, now finding themselves in a similar situation.
