Gov. Gavin Newsom (D-Calif.) said on CNN’s “The Read” that Republicans want to give rapists “more rights” than the women they impregnate.
A partial transcription follows:
TAPPER: They invoked the wrath of a holy God in their decision.
NEWSOME: Yes, absolutely.
TAPPER: As a result, multiple clinics across the state are currently suspending IVF treatments. You said you found the decision disgusting. What are Democrats going to do about it?
NEWSOME: Well, we’re going to continue to attack. We are supported by the American people. We are backed up after Dobbs. I see that the Republicans are defending this issue because the American people are experiencing it, and for good reason. This extremism revealed the ultimate extremism on this issue that affects one in six women who will have fertility issues in their lifetime. This is deep.
And you talk about freedom. Please forgive the Republicans for this gospel of freedom. What about family freedom? What will happen to the rights of those who want to start a family? Think about it, Jake. Look, everyone knows this. I saw the statistics: Since Dobbs, 65,000 people have been born from rape in 14 states. What Republicans seem to be trying to say is that rapists have more right to have babies than families who are desperately trying to get the privileges you and I had as fathers and parents. It’s shameful and for them it’s a political issue, but it’s also a moral issue. And what happened in Alabama was disgusting. By the way, Alabama also has an AG pushing for a travel ban that would criminalize travel for people seeking abortions out of state. The state of the Republican Party is so extreme.
