Congressional Republicans Criticize Governor Walz Over CDL Issuances
A coalition of 18 Republican lawmakers has sent a letter to Minnesota Governor Tim Walz, expressing strong disapproval of his management concerning foreign nationals obtaining commercial driver’s licenses (CDLs) unlawfully. They are urging the revocation of these licenses.
The letter, spearheaded by Rep. Pete Stover from Minnesota, starts with an assertion that many residents are in “shock and disbelief” regarding the alleged fraud and mismanagement of taxpayer funds under Walz’s administration.
A recent Department of Transportation audit revealed that around one-third of Minnesota’s nonresident CDLs—available to noncitizens legally allowed to work in the U.S.—were issued unlawfully. The state has been given a 30-day window to rectify this issue, or it may face a loss of up to $30.4 million in federal highway funding, as stated by officials on Wednesday.
The letter also references previous controversies involving Walz, including matters related to the U.S. Treasury, which surfaced prior to the recent CDL issues. Accusations have emerged regarding whether Walz and the Biden administration have overseen what is described as “reckless mismanagement” of funds that reportedly ended up with the terrorist group al-Shabaab in Somalia.
An investigation was initiated by the Treasury Department following these findings. Reports indicate that significant sums of misappropriated funds were funneled to terrorist organizations.
The lawmakers pointed out in their letter, “Despite all of this, you do not seem the least bit concerned… There has been no concrete answer regarding measures to halt this fraud; the situation continues to escalate.” They labeled this oversight as either negligence or incompetence, asserting that it has brought shame to Minnesota while allowing for widespread abuse of taxpayer money.
The DOT audit revealed that licenses were granted to individuals lacking confirmed legal status, including those whose legal residence had already expired.
Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration Administrator, Derek D. Bars, commented that “Minnesota is openly defying our rules, plain and simple.”
The letter continued, warning that not only is the state jeopardizing vital infrastructure funding, but it’s also endangering the safety of both Minnesotans and other Americans.
The Republican representatives emphasized the urgency for Walz to prioritize public safety and rectify the situation immediately by canceling the improperly issued CDLs.
In a statement, Stauber noted the gravity of the situation, highlighting ongoing fraudulent schemes that have drained taxpayer funds, emphasizing that the current administration is compromising public security.
The letter was signed by various Republican representatives from different states, including Majority Whip Tom Emmer and Rep. Michelle Fischbach among others, all echoing sentiments of accountability for Walz’s perceived failures. Emmer summarized the group’s discontent, stating that law-abiding Minnesotans are unjustly bearing the consequences of Walz’s actions.
