Republicans caution that Democrats are engaging in a 'risky strategy' regarding the DHS shutdown

Republicans are cautioning against reopening the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) following two shootings on Thursday, one involving a suspect tied to ISIS. Meanwhile, Democrats are taking a stronger stance regarding the situation.

On Thursday, Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer and his caucus blocked a bill aimed at providing year-round funding for DHS, as well as attempts to secure temporary funding. Just as the votes concluded and lawmakers left Washington, D.C., a mass shooting occurred at the Temple Israel Synagogue in West Bloomfield, Michigan.

In this incident, the shooter was killed in a confrontation with police. Additionally, a shooting at Old Dominion University in Virginia, carried out by an individual with prior ISIS-related convictions, resulted in one death and two injuries.

Senate Majority Leader John Thune, a Republican from South Dakota, remarked to Fox News Digital, “The consequences of defunding DHS will be felt eventually.”

Despite this increasing chaos, Senate Democrats are sticking to their decision to keep DHS closed, ignoring the rising threats, including the potential for Iranian sleeper cells.

Senate Republicans have attempted three times to pass a budget that adequately funds DHS, and Thune emphasized that it has been two weeks since Schumer and the Democrats responded to the White House’s latest proposals.

When asked if recent violent events could lead Democrats to reconsider their position, Thune replied, “I don’t know.” He added, “This is a dangerous game, and some people will likely get hurt.”

The DHS has been non-operational for nearly a month due to funding issues, and there’s skepticism about Congress reaching an agreement in the near future. Republicans are concerned that President Trump’s confrontations with Iran may pose escalating threats requiring a well-funded DHS response.

Senate Majority Whip John Barrasso criticized Schumer and the Democrats for their continued obstruction, accusing them of attempting to “tear apart” DHS. He stated, “They are so beholden to the far left that they seem indifferent to the dangers we face.” He highlighted that the U.S. has experienced terrorist incidents, noting that there have been two in just the last couple of weeks.

Democrats have also proposed measures to defund Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) while seeking full funding for DHS. However, Republicans argue that these proposals are excessive and are advocating for stricter reforms.

Fox News Digital reached out to Schumer’s office to inquire if the recent shootings would alter his position regarding the shutdown, but no comment was provided immediately.

In the meantime, Schumer issued a statement in response to the synagogue shooting, failing to address the funding dispute or DHS. He remarked, “Anti-Semitism is not theoretical. It’s real and deadly.” He called for global solidarity against hatred, asserting that everyone has a duty to combat this insidious threat.
