GOP Considering National Convention Before Midterms
House Speaker Mike Johnson mentioned that the Republican Party could hold a national convention prior to the 2026 midterm elections, following discussions he had with former President Donald Trump about the idea.
Typically, national party conventions occur every four years, coinciding with presidential elections. However, Johnson, a Republican from Louisiana, shared that his conversation with Trump led him to think, “That’s genius.”
Recently, President Trump also suggested on Truth Social that he might propose a national convention for the Republican Party just ahead of the midterms, noting, “It has never been done before. STAY TUNED!!!”
This convention could provide the GOP with a chance to enhance its appeal to voters, especially as midterm elections often see a shift against the incumbent party. The Republicans are looking to consolidate their Congressional majority by rallying and exciting their base.
Johnson also pointed out that the 47th president “loves a big show.”
In collaboration with Trump and Senate Majority Leader John Thune, Speaker Johnson is actively working on organizing this Republican National Convention, which he described as a “done deal.”
“I’m really excited about it,” Johnson said. “I can’t wait. We have so much to celebrate.”
Meanwhile, Democrats are reportedly contemplating their own midterm convention to bolster their message and voter engagement, which has seemingly weakened since the 2024 election. They are eager to regain control of both the House and Senate.
🚨 BREAKING: The Republican Party is most likely going to have a full presidential-style CONVENTION for the 2026 Midterms – Speaker Mike Johnson says it’s pretty much a “done deal.” Yet another amazing idea by President Trump that could juice TURNOUT next November.
