Republicans criticize assault on Ilhan Omar after individual drives into Minnesota town hall

Support for Rep. Ilhan Omar after City Hall Incident

House Republicans have rallied behind Rep. Ilhan Omar (D-Minn.) following an incident at a City Hall event in Minneapolis on Tuesday night, where she was confronted and sprayed with an unknown substance.

“This is completely unacceptable. I’m glad Rep. Omar is safe,” Rep. Pete Stover (R-Minn.) expressed on X, highlighting a rare moment of bipartisanship amid rising political tensions and violence.

Support came from conservative and moderate Republican members after a man interrupted her public event. The situation escalated quickly, leaving many concerned about the increasing volatility in political discourse.

“Political, religious, or ideological differences never justify violence,” stated Rep. Nathaniel Moran (R-Texas). He emphasized that those who resort to violence to prove a point only harm the very rights that underpin the nation.

Rep. Tom Barrett (R-Mich.) remarked on the disturbing trend of political violence, noting, “The assault on Congresswoman Omar is alarming and unacceptable. Her attacker must be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law.” He pointed out that such incidents have surged by 57% since 2024.

Rep. Don Bacon (R-Nebraska) also condemned the attack, affirming that, “We always have the right to free speech and to petition the government, but political violence must be dealt with harshly.” He stressed the need for accountability in these matters.

Rep. Nancy Mace (R-S.C.) expressed discomfort over the incident, stating that while she disagrees with Omar, the physical assault is simply not acceptable. “This is not who we are,” she added.

Democratic lawmakers quickly pointed fingers at former President Donald Trump, arguing that his rhetoric fuels such violence. Rep. Rob Menendez (D-N.J.) remarked, “President Trump’s hateful and dangerous rhetoric incites this type of violence.” Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-N.Y.) echoed similar sentiments about the timing of Omar’s attack in relation to ongoing political tensions.

The confrontation unfolded shortly after Omar’s town hall began, yet she remained until the end, demonstrating her resolve. Following the incident, her office released a statement describing how an attacker attempted to spray her with a syringe filled with an unknown substance. Security and local police swiftly arrested the assailant, who now faces third-degree assault charges.

Despite the chaos, Omar’s office reassured that she was unharmed and would continue her work, stating, “She is not letting the bullies win.”
