Virginia Attorney General Candidate Faces Backlash Over Controversial Texts

A fellow Democrat is backing Jay Jones, who’s running for Attorney General in Virginia. However, his campaign has hit a bump after a text he sent in 2022 surfaced. In it, Jones expressed a hope that the children of former Republican House Speaker Todd Gilbert would die. He even suggested that such tragedies could potentially be “good things” for his political aspirations. Meanwhile, Abigail Spanberger, another Democratic candidate, condemned the message but did not call for him to withdraw from the race.

“I condemn violent language in politics,” Spanberger stated, noting that she addressed the issue with Jones directly after the texts came to light.

Notably, Jones also made disturbing references to wanting to harm GOP leaders, as revealed in the messages. Republican Attorney General Jason Miyares and others have criticized Jones harshly over these revelations, raising doubts about his suitability for the role.

“Jay Jones shows that he is reckless, biased and willing to compromise his integrity,” Miyares remarked in a letter to Virginians shared on social media over the weekend. He labeled Jones’ remarks as disqualifying and pointed out the serious implications they hold for the election.

“If you think it’s okay to wish death upon a political opponent, then vote for me,” Miyares wrote, emphasizing a stark choice for voters. “If achieving your political goals is worth even the loss of innocent lives, then I’m your man.” He reassured his stance on protecting all Virginians, no matter their political affiliation.

On October 4th, Lt. Governor Winsome Earle-Sears condemned the increasing moral decay in politics, suggesting that candidates like Jones should not hold office. “The enemy is among us, and we’re turning on each other in Virginia and across America,” Sears expressed, citing Jones’ comments about children dying as particularly troubling for someone seeking to be the top law enforcement officer in the state.

In the wake of the controversy, Jones has issued an apology for his remarks, calling them “embarrassing and shameful,” and claimed he reached out to Todd Gilbert and his family to express regret.

This incident adds to the rising tensions in the political landscape, with many concerned about the potential for real-world violence stemming from incendiary rhetoric. Virginia’s Governor Glenn Youngkin has urged Jones to exit the race, describing his comments as “violent and disgusting” and stating they’re beyond what should be tolerated in public discourse.
