Despite a week-long controversy over a comedian's joke at Donald Trump's rally, Republicans will take control of Puerto Rico's governor's mansion on Election Day as Rep. Jennifer González Colón (R-PR) won the election. I flipped it over.
Gonzalez Colon, who currently serves as Puerto Rico's “resident commissioner,” is a member of the U.S. House of Representatives but does not have voting rights. Elected in 2016, she was the first woman to hold the position.
Comedian Tony Hinchcliffe's joke at Trump's rally at Madison Square Garden in New York City on October 27 gave him victory despite headwinds in the final days of the campaign. Hinchcliffe was one of the first warm-up acts on the six-hour show and joked about Puerto Rico's fight against pollution, calling the island “trash.” The crowd roared in disapproval.
Puerto Rico's Republican Party Chairman Ángel Cintron was so upset that he said he would not vote for Trump unless the candidate apologized. (Mr. Trump said he had not heard the joke and did not know the comedian.)
Democrats were hoping, and the media had speculated, that there would be a backlash from Puerto Rican voters both on the island and on the mainland. But if there was a rebound, it didn't show up in early results Tuesday. González Colon guided Her race was eight points apart. And Trump endorsed a Florida county with a large Puerto Rican population.
