Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg said Wednesday on MSNBC’s “Deadline” that he thinks the Republican Party “sacrificed its claim to being the party of family a long time ago.”
Buttigieg said, “Classic projection, isn’t it? All of the things he talks about, virtue, strength, security, family, these are all things that the Trump Republican Party has completely abandoned and made no claim to. Really? A party led by Donald Trump, with all the infidelity and porn stars and everything else associated with this man. Security? You’re talking about a party led by a man who has been fooled so many times by people like Putin and Xi Jinping. And family? Well, I think this is really what it’s about. A lot of people at home are thinking about family. I’m thinking about our family. And if Kamala Harris wins and the Democrats win, our families, our husbands, and the sons and daughters that we’re raising, would be a lot happier.”
He added, “Why? Because those policies would support our families. They sacrificed any claim to be the party of families a long time ago. Not only with the disturbing stances that have been taken by leaders like Donald Trump that are at odds with family values, but also with his opposition to IVF, his opposition to the Affordable Care Act that is so important to so many families, his discussion of abolishing the Department of Education, they abandoned any serious claim to be the party of families a long time ago. And I think the reason we’re in this Fox News panic is because we can’t talk in terms of what this election means for our lives. That’s why, like Trump himself, they’re just trying to outdo each other with the most outrageous and insulting statements.”
