Republican senators have initiated an investigation into various manufacturers of abortion pills amid concerns regarding the safety and purported illegal distribution of these drugs, according to Blaze News.
Senator Bill Cassidy from Louisiana, who heads the Senate Health, Education, Labor and Pensions Committee, is at the forefront of this inquiry. The investigation targets several unknown manufacturers, including Draco Labs, Evita Solutions, and GenBioPro. Cassidy, a trained physician, has accused these companies of hiding the dangers associated with abortion pills and not adhering to the basic safety standards set by the Food and Drug Administration.
“Women deserve genuine healthcare, not medications ordered through faceless online platforms,” he remarked.
He further criticized these chemical manufacturers, claiming they “profit from the loss of innocent lives while jeopardizing mothers’ health.” Cassidy stated that these manufacturers and their associated websites have fueled a surge in online sales of these potentially harmful drugs, disregarding women’s health and safety, which could lead to coercion and abuse.
He urged the FDA to utilize its existing powers to mitigate this issue and promptly reintroduce important safeguards, including requirements for in-person dispensing.
Cassidy, alongside fellow Republican senators Steve Daines, James Lankford, Cindy Hyde-Smith, and Lindsey Graham, has sent requests to the three manufacturers for all documents related to the production and usage of these abortion medications. They also alerted the FDA about possible violations.
Support for this investigation includes well-known pro-life advocates like Carol Tobias, president of the National Right to Life. She mentioned that the letter brings up significant and overdue questions about whether federal protocols are being adhered to and if women’s safety is at risk as a result.
Tobias added that “women should have access to actual healthcare, not drugs dispensed via unregulated websites.” Live Action President Lyla Rose also voiced concerns, noting that data illustrates that one in ten women who take abortion pills face serious complications, yet essential safety measures are lacking.
In the wake of the recent Supreme Court decision on abortion, Marjorie Dannenfelser, president of Susan B. Anthony Pro-Life America, expressed alarm over the rising numbers of abortions. She pointed out that the availability of mail-order drugs has led to an increase in abortions rather than a decrease, stating that over 1.1 million procedures are now performed annually. These companies, reliant on the sale of abortion pills marked with black box warnings, are reportedly making significant profits while putting women’s lives at risk and undermining democratically established protections.
So far, Draco Laboratories, Evita Solutions, and GenBioPro have not responded to requests for comment from Blaze News.
