Republicans maintain a 218-213 majority in the House as special elections approach

Republicans are maintaining a slim majority in the House, currently at 218 to 213, but House Speaker Mike Johnson is not expecting immediate support. This month, the unexpected retirement of Representative Marjorie Taylor Greene from Georgia and the death of California’s Doug LaMalfa have further diminished Republican numbers.

Because of these developments, House leaders are keeping a close watch on their members.

Concerns Grow Over Democratic Gains

Some worry that the fragile Republican majority may be at risk. Johnson urged his members to stay cautious, joking about avoiding risky activities and advising them to focus on their health during this critical time.

His office has indicated that lawmakers should be present unless faced with dire circumstances, emphasizing the need for attendance on Capitol Hill.

Impact of LaMalfa’s Passing

Currently, there are four vacant congressional seats, which will be filled through special elections. However, it seems likely that Democrats could benefit more from these elections than their Republican counterparts.

Upcoming Special Elections

January 31

The Democratic-heavy 18th Congressional District in Texas will hold elections to replace U.S. Rep. Sylvester Turner, who passed away last March. Democrats Christian Menefee and Amanda Edwards, both from Houston, are competing in this special election.

Texas has adjusted its congressional maps for future elections, but the special elections will follow the current boundaries.

February 5

New Jersey’s 11th Congressional District will see a Democratic primary with eleven candidates running, after Governor Mikie Sherrill resigned following her gubernatorial victory. The winner of this primary will contend with Joe Hathaway, the sole Republican candidate in the subsequent special election.

March 10

A significant 22 candidates, including 17 Republicans, are in the running to replace Greene in Georgia’s 14th Congressional District. Given the district’s strong Republican lean, Greene had won re-election convincingly last year.

June 2

California will also hold a special election for Doug LaMalfa’s seat in the 1st Congressional District, with the general election scheduled for August 4.

Both parties have expressed grievances regarding the timing of these elections, with some arguing that the delays have prolonged the void left by the deceased representatives.
