Republicans Prevail in Congressional Baseball Game

For the fifth consecutive year, Republicans triumphed over Democrats in the annual Congressional baseball game, winning 13-2 at Washington National Parks on Wednesday.

The Republican team donned matching red uniforms and MAGA hats, while the Democrats sported a variety of jerseys and hats. Representative Greg Steube from Florida pitched a solid game, throwing five innings and giving up two runs with seven strikeouts.

In the first inning, Steube faced a bit of trouble as the Democrats loaded the bases with two outs, but a diving catch by Representative August Pfluger from Texas helped close out the inning, leaving three men stranded.

Rep. Pete Aguilar from California, playing for the Democrats, had a challenging outing, conceding 13 runs over six innings. The Republican team scored their first run in the second inning, which came after a slow error from the Democrats’ defense. They increased their lead to 5-0 with a rally in the third, though the Democrats managed to narrow it to 5-2 later on.

However, the Republicans really took control in the fourth inning, scoring five more runs and extending their lead to 10-2.

Representative Merlin Statzman from Indiana broke into a Trump dance after hitting a two-run double in the fifth inning, signaling a strong performance from the GOP.

As the game progressed, the Republicans added two more runs with key doubles, bringing the score to 13-2. Notably, Senator Joni Ernst from Iowa joined the game as a pinch runner, making history as the first woman to participate in this match.

This year, the Congressional baseball game raised an impressive $2.75 million for charity, setting a new record. Despite the Republicans’ recent dominance—winning the last five matches—the Democrats had previously claimed 10 of the last 11 games before this streak began.

The last few years have seen blowouts, with scores like 31-11 in 2024 and 16-6 in 2023. The Republicans’ current winning streak started with a narrow 13-12 victory in 2021. It’s interesting, isn’t it, how these friendly competitions can turn so fierce? It feels like more than just a game sometimes.
