Republicans on Wednesday heaped praise on Republican Conference Chairwoman Elise Stefanik (R-N.Y.) for providing leadership and stability during 22 days of intense speaking engagements at the Capitol.
Amid the chaos and confusion, Stefanik, the fourth-ranking Republican in the House, remained on the sidelines of the race for speakership, holding meetings and announcing support for candidates. She gave an enthusiastic candidate speech on the House floor for Rep. Jim Jordan (R-Ohio), and doubled down on her efforts in the nomination speech for newly elected House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-Louisiana). I doubled it. “Even in difficult circumstances, she avoided conflict and put the conference, the party and the country above other considerations,” said Rep. Mike Lawler (R-N.Y.). Said politiko Wednesday.

Stefanik’s tact during the campaign underscores her focus on using her position as conference chair to defeat House Democrats in 2024 and win a majority in the next political cycle. It has a long-term goal.

House Republicans elected Stefanik as their 2021 conference chair. Former President Donald Trump supported Stefanik’s call for the conference after the two developed a strong relationship during the impeachment attempt of Rep. Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.). Her rise was a big hit among populist Republicans who had distrusted her predecessor, Democratic ally Liz Cheney (R-Wyo.), a “warmonger” whom President Trump called her.
Stefanik quickly began raising money for House Republicans (one of her primary responsibilities), launching a PAC to support female House candidates, and activating media engagement. I set about doing that. Her efforts paid off. Republicans partially flipped four seats in New York state in 2022 to take back the House of Representatives, securing a narrow but important majority.
“As chair of the House Republican Conference, I am proud of all of our members’ hard work to deliver victories and results in Congress,” Stefanik told Breitbart News in August.
