Republican candidate Nick Begich on Wednesday officially ousted incumbent Democratic Rep. Mary Peltola from Alaska's only House seat, boosting Republicans' narrow majority in the chamber.
begich won Mr. Peltola received 51.3% of the vote, and Mr. Peltola received 48.7%. Mr. Peltola first flipped a seat in 2022 after Alaska introduced ranked-choice voting. “The path forward will not be built by one or three people working for all of Alaska, but by all Alaskans working together to build a future that works for all of us.”
The 2024 election pitted two Republican candidates, Begich and Nancy Dahlstrom, against Democratic incumbents. Republicans feared the two Republican candidates would split the vote as they did in 2022, and Dahlstrom withdrew in August to avoid becoming a spoiler candidate.
“Ranked choice voting has been counted, eliminating any remaining doubts and confirming our victory,” Begich said. said “I am truly honored to have everyone's trust and support,” he wrote in a post on X on Wednesday.
“Alaska’s potential is unparalleled, but many challenges remain before Alaskans can fully realize that potential,” Begich continued. “I am committed to fighting for jobs and the economy, protecting our unique way of life, and making sure our voices are heard loud and clear in Washington.”
Republicans currently hold 219 seats and Democrats hold 213. Republicans have an advantage, but the gap is narrowing as President-elect Donald Trump's recent nominations include three Republicans.
“The path forward will not be built by one or three people working for all of Alaska, but by all Alaskans working together to build a future that works for all of us.” Peltra he said. said In X's Wednesday post.
“Nick, I'm rooting for you,” Peltola continued. “Remember that the people of Washington, D.C. keep saying you're one of three people, when in reality, you're one of over 700,000 people, including me, ready to fight for our state. One of the Alaskans.
