Residents of Chicago call for increased police presence as crime escalates in the city.

Residents in Chicago are increasingly calling for more police presence as crime rates rise in the city, and there are discussions about possibly deploying the National Guard by the Trump administration.

Osiris King, a local from the south side, reflected on the changes he’s noticed. “When I was a kid in the early 2000s, it wasn’t like this. Sure, it was tough, but now… kids are running wild in my neighborhoods,” he shared with Fox News Digital.

This call for action follows a violent Labor Day weekend where 32 shootings occurred in Chicago, resulting in at least seven fatalities and 37 injuries.

King expressed concern over how young people are behaving now, mentioning how they’re exposed to guns at a much earlier age than he was. “Kids these days, they act as if guns are toys,” he added.

The situation escalates.

In light of the rising crime, a local man emphasized the need for more police, suggesting Chicago could use around 10,000 officers. He also mentioned the importance of mental health support, jokingly saying that if there were a mental health facility, it could help make “illegals” more productive citizens.

The topic of police presence became a point of contention during an interview on MSNBC with Chicago’s Democratic Mayor Brandon Johnson. He seemed to sidestep direct questions regarding whether more police would help curb crime, instead focusing on the need for expanded social programs, such as affordable housing.

Mixed feelings about solutions.

Some, like Mayor Nick Sposato, believe increasing police force is essential. “That’s what people want—more protection,” he stated, having lived in Chicago for 67 years. He expressed frustration that Johnson failed to acknowledge the necessity of adding more officers to the city.

While Trump recently sent the National Guard to Washington, D.C., he suggested a similar move for Chicago, which Johnson criticized as a “serious violation of our constitution.”

According to FBI data, Chicago faces a crime rate higher than the national average, influenced by issues like poverty and gang violence. Curiously, data from 2023 indicates that other Illinois cities have even higher rates of violent crime than Chicago.

Reflecting on the impact of crime, a local pastor pointed out the daily suffering of innocent people, saying it’s not just about lives lost but also about how children survive in harsh conditions.

However, there is significant opposition to the idea of sending the National Guard. Sposato, a supporter of Trump, argued that military personnel lack the necessary police authority to deal with crime effectively.

The Chicago Police Department addressed concerns around staffing, suggesting the conversation should start by evaluating the community’s needs rather than simply assuming a shortage of officers. They expressed that community partnerships could play a critical role in addressing violence.
