Just a few days before the opening ceremony in Arizona, Congress passed a resolution to honor the influential conservative figure Charlie Kirk.

Kirk, who was 31, was tragically shot on September 10 while addressing students at Utah Valley University in Orem, Utah. A 22-year-old resident of Utah has been charged in connection with his death.

In the Senate, Senator Rick Scott (R-FL) introduced a resolution designating October 14, 2025, as a day of remembrance for Kirk, who would have turned 32. Scott referred to Kirk’s death as a “devastating loss.”

“Charlie was a good man—an honorable husband, father, and friend. His life was guided by his faith, his convictions, and his belief that he could contribute positively to America. He stood for God, the American dream, family values, and the core principles of our nation,” Scott stated. “Charlie devoted himself to demonstrating that the power of ideas can drive change, and that’s exactly what he did.”

The resolution was passed unanimously, though it’s merely a simple resolution, meaning it doesn’t create a law and doesn’t necessitate a full Senate vote.

In the House, a group of lawmakers also introduced a resolution to honor Kirk and denounce political violence. Speaker Mike Johnson (R-LA) confirmed on Friday that the resolution had been approved to honor “our friend Charlie Kirk’s life and legacy.”

These actions do not establish any national holidays; instead, Scott’s resolution encourages educational institutions and civic organizations to observe October 14 with appropriate programs that celebrate the principles of faith, freedom, and democracy that Kirk supported.

Scott was one of the many who gathered in Glendale, Arizona, to attend Kirk’s public memorial.

Kirk was originally from Arizona, having grown up near Chicago and founded Turning Point before relocating to Phoenix. Vice President JD Vance, who indicated that Kirk’s advocacy was a significant factor in his selection as Vice President, transported Kirk’s remains from Utah to Arizona on Air Force Two the day after his death. Vance also served as a guest host on Kirk’s podcast.
