Cracker Barrel Faces Backlash Over New Look and Menu Changes
Rachel Love, a 38-year-old Tennessee native and a dedicated fan of Cracker Barrel, is quite vocal about her concerns for the restaurant chain. After visiting a location in April, she noticed significant changes. The once nostalgic atmosphere, complete with the familiar peg game, had vanished. It felt less like the cozy country store she remembered.
Love shared her thoughts in a viral TikTok video captioned, “When the Cracker Barrel robbed you of the last nostalgia you left behind.” Her sentiments resonated with many others, sparking a wave of criticism online regarding the brand’s new minimalist text-only logo and overall design direction.
“It seems like they’ve ruined something good,” Love expressed in an interview. In response to the backlash, Cracker Barrel’s Chief Marketing Officer acknowledged that classic features such as the peg game and rocking chairs would remain, claiming they haven’t fundamentally changed. However, after Love recalled a response from the restaurant’s official TikTok account that was later deleted, she felt this indicated a lack of sincerity in their message.
Returning to Cracker Barrel in June, armed with gift cards from a surprise gift basket she received, Love was disappointed to find the dining experience had transformed. “It didn’t feel like a Cracker Barrel anymore,” she said, describing it as more polished and generic—lacking the homey touch that had previously defined it. The food quality seemed to have declined as well. “The biscuits were hard and not the buttery delights I remembered,” she reflected. Her go-to meal of meatloaf, mac and cheese, green beans, and mashed potatoes didn’t fare much better; the green beans were overly canned, and the mashed potatoes had a questionable texture.
Cracker Barrel claims the changes are aligned with what guests want, even though many loyal customers feel that nostalgia is an essential part of the dining experience. Another patron who spoke about the revamped look described it as lacking the warm, home-cooked feel that made Cracker Barrel special in the first place.
A spokesperson for the chain stated that the modifications have received “overwhelmingly positive” feedback, though they acknowledged that some voices in the community would disagree. This leads to a curious question: Are the updates truly what the majority desires, or are they transforming the essence of Cracker Barrel into something unrecognizable?
As discussions continue, customers like Love remain hopeful that some locations retain their traditional charm. “Please don’t change any more stores,” she implores, voicing a sentiment that many long-time patrons share. She might not have a formal business background, but her observations reflect the genuine concerns of a devoted customer base.
