Restaurant recognized as California's top hidden gem for comfort food

At a quaint restaurant in California, the spirit of the Wild West is still alive.

Descanso Junction Restaurant has earned the title of the best hole-in-the-wall spot for comfort food in California, according to The Takeout.

This roadside gem is situated along State Route 79 in Southern California, roughly a 40-minute drive east from the sunny shores of San Diego.

Established in 2003 by husband-and-wife duo Tammy and Brett Cooker, the restaurant showcases a true Western vibe, complete with saloon-inspired decor and a hearty menu.

They serve classic American comfort food like eggs benedict, biscuits and gravy, chicken-fried steak, meatloaf, and salisbury steak. Despite its modest size, the menu features a variety of choices, including BBQ, Italian, and Mexican dishes.

One diner enthusiastically shared their experience on Yelp, saying, “This is a great place to stop and eat on the back country roads of East County San Diego. Comfort food at its finest!”

They mentioned enjoying the Jack Daniel’s tri-tip sandwich accompanied by crispy onion rings, as well as a meatloaf and mashed potatoes dinner that was quite satisfying. The diner noted the friendly staff, reasonable prices, and a daily rotation of specials.

In addition to its restaurant offerings, the business expanded to include catering services in 2015 and opened an outdoor venue for events, including a summer concert series, in 2020.

Tammy Cooker expressed her hope to foster a community spirit: “My vision was that we would know all the customers and become not only friends but a meeting place for all to feel welcome.”

Reflecting on their place in the area, she added, “Little did we know what a unique part of San Diego we were to become a part of. The community was so warm and welcoming.”

The restaurant building itself has a storied past, having been constructed in 1920. Over the years, it has served various purposes, including a general store and a stage shop, before becoming a restaurant in the 1940s.

For the Cookers, this establishment represents much more than just a business. They see it as a gathering place for the community.

“Most businesses are only looking forward to AI order-your-own food off a tablet and less human connection,” Tammy noted. “We strive to bring back the past, where families gather around the table to reconnect. A place where everybody knows your name.”
