Today marks the completion of the lineup for the 109th Indianapolis 500.
The full field qualifying yesterday set positions 13 to 30 on the starting grid. However, Sunday will unveil three key sessions to finalize the lineup, determining which car will take pole position and which will start from the 33rd position.
The first session, called the “Highway 12,” involves 12 cars, specifically the fastest from Saturday’s qualifying. Each driver is guaranteed one 4-lap run in this session, based on their speed from the previous day, starting with the 12 slowest contenders. This gives an introduction to the drivers competing in the Fast 12.
Participants include:
Alex Palou, Josef Newgarden, Pato O’Ward, Scott Dixon, Robert Schwartzman, David Marcus, Felix Rosenqvist, Takuma Sato, Will Power, Marcus Ericsson, Christian Lundgaard, and Scott McLaughlin.
More information about McLaughlin will be provided shortly.
At the end of the hour, the best six cars will move on to the Firestone Fast 6, while the remaining cars will secure spots 7 through 12 in the Indianapolis 500.
Following this, there will be a final chance qualifying round. With 34 cars vying for 33 positions, four drivers—Marco Andretti, Marcus Armstrong, Jacob Abel, and Rinus VeeKay—will compete for the last three spots.
Each car is allowed one attempt in the 4-lap qualifying round, although they can make multiple attempts until the session ends.
The day will conclude with the Firestone Fast 6, where the top six cars from the Fast 12 will compete for the pole position. This session lasts 30 minutes, with each car guaranteed one attempt at a 4-lap qualifying run.
