A video in which Vice President Kamala Harris claims that young people are experiencing “climate anxiety” that is causing them to rethink big plans for the future, like buying a home or starting a family, is continuing to go viral almost a year after it was released.
Donald Trump Jr. shared a video that resurfaced in September 2023, showing the presumptive Democratic presidential nominee making remarks during his “Fight for Our Freedom” national college tour.
“WATCH: Resurfaced video shows Kamala Harris suggesting young people shouldn’t have children because of climate change,” Trump said in a post on X. “Harris calls climate anxiety ‘fear of the future and the unknown of whether it even makes sense to think about children.'”
Harris was addressing an audience at Reading Area Community College in Berks County, Pennsylvania, on Sept. 19, 2023, during a stop to tour colleges.
Harris claims “climate anxiety” is making young people question the “worthiness” of having kids or buying a home
She told the crowd that the Biden-Harris ticket saw record turnout among young voters in the 2020 election, which spurred the administration’s efforts to forgive student loans, but which recently stalled in court.
“We’re not going to stop fighting for that, because young people are saying we’re not going to leave it up to someone else to respond to the climate crisis. I’ve heard young leaders talk about this term that they invented: ‘climate anxiety,'” Harris said, shifting focus. “It’s anxiety about the future, it’s anxiety about whether it even makes sense to think about having children, whether it even makes sense to think about buying a home because of what the climate is going to do.”
Pollsters say they’ve seen ‘striking changes’ in Democratic voters since Harris took office

At the time, some on social media criticized Harris’ “climate anxiety” claims, arguing that Americans tend to factor rising energy, food and housing costs into their decisions about whether to have children. The Republican-led House Budget Committee has blamed the Biden administration’s economic policies for leading to the fastest increase in mortgage rates since 1981. A Gallup poll in May found that a record low of 21% of Americans think now is a good time to buy a home.
Though the original video was nearly a year old, Trump’s repost drew attention from some, including X owner Elon Musk.

“She’s an extinctionist,” Musk wrote about Harris.
Still, one Democrat began his post on X with “LOL” and offered his own opinion in a reply.

“You can’t do anything to her. She’s just addressing the fears young people have shared with her about the future, like having kids,” a user wrote. “Disingenuous and disingenuous. But why would you expect anything more from the Trump campaign? You’re panicking!”
