Retired LA cop disappears without a trace on vacation to Greece

A retired Los Angeles County sheriff’s officer never returned home from a vacation on a Greek island, leaving his family frantically searching for him.

Albert Keilbert, 59, a veteran hiker with dual Greek nationality, was last seen setting off on a four-hour hike on the island of Amorgos to have lunch with friends, his family said. Fox 11When the retired police officer failed to arrive, his friend contacted Greek authorities.

According to police, he set out on the hike at approximately 7 a.m. local time and did not arrive at his destination by 3:30 p.m. on June 11. As of June 13, he had been missing for more than three days.

“It’s almost our third day here,” said Oliver Carivet, the man’s brother who was at the store Wednesday. “We don’t have any water… We’re just so confused.”

“My biggest hope is that the police find him, treat him and bring him home,” his brother said.

A group of family and friends with search and rescue knowledge headed to the island on Thursday, while other family members were using their Hermosa Beach home as a headquarters and communicating by phone and email with authorities and friends of Carivet, the media outlet reported.

Amorgos’s tourism director said Kalibet had been visiting the island every year for about 10 years, and told the Greek Reporter newspaper: “It’s strange because he wasn’t the first to walk this route.” (Fox 11)

Kalibet has been visiting Amorgos almost every year for the past 10 years, Popi Despotidi, Amorgos’ deputy mayor for tourism, told The Greek Reporter.

“It’s strange because he’s not the first to walk this route,” Despotidi told the international news agency. “He knows Amorgos better than I do.”

Kalibet’s disappearance comes just days after popular British TV presenter Michael Mosley was found dead in Greece on June 9 after going on a hike on June 5. Lefteris Papakalodoukas, mayor of Symi island where Mosley went missing, said his body was found lying face-up against a fence and was believed to have fallen down a steep slope.

Meanwhile, on the island of Samos, a 74-year-old Dutch tourist has been missing since Sunday. ABC7 No. 7 report.

“Unfortunately, at this time there is no known fate for either of them,” Greek police spokesman Constantia Dimoglidou told CNN, adding that “police, firefighters and volunteers are searching for both men, including conducting an aerial search.”
