Reuters published a story on Friday alleging that supporters of former President Donald Trump were calling for “rioting” and “violent retaliation” following Thursday’s verdict in New York that found him guilty of 34 charges in a trial deemed unfair.
The headline of the Reuters article is “Trump Supporters Call for Riots, Violent Retaliation After Verdict” and the only source of this claim is a random comment on “Truth Social Platform, Patriots.Win, Gateway Pundit.”
After Trump became the first U.S. president to be convicted, his supporters responded with dozens of violent online posts, according to a Reuters review of comments on three pro-Trump websites – his own Truth Social platform, Patriots Win and Gateway Pundit. …
While all the posts identified by Reuters contained calls for violence or insurrection, most did not meet the legal standard for an actionable threat, which typically requires proof that the comments reflect a clear intent to take action or sow fear, rather than merely suggesting a dire outcome.
Still, one researcher who studies extremist militias said a guilty verdict could strengthen the belief among some of Trump’s supporters that he is the victim of a plot orchestrated by his enemies, potentially inciting violence.
Reuters has not confirmed whether these statements were actually made by Trump supporters, nor has it cited what actual, verifiable Trump supporters have said in public, or what elected officials who support Trump have said or done.
Trump supporters have been urging each other to donate, volunteer and vote for his campaign, which announced on Friday that it had raised a record-breaking $34.8 million in the hours since the ruling.
Many Trump supporters held upside-down flags, a symbol of the beleaguered nation, in protest.
