Rangers Look to Rebuild After Olympic Break

The Rangers have returned from the Olympic break, aiming to discover a winning formula that has been lacking throughout their disappointing season at the bottom of the standings.

Head coach Mike Sullivan appears to have found a promising strategy by pairing inconsistent winger Alexis Lafrenière with rookie Gabe Perreault and Mika Zibanejad. This trio has combined for an impressive seven goals and seven assists in consecutive wins against the Flyers and Flames leading up to Thursday’s matchup in Winnipeg.

“I thought Micah’s line has been really effective lately,” Sullivan commented after the team’s 4-0 victory over Calgary at MSG on Tuesday.

“They all possess great offensive instincts. Their style might differ a bit, but it seems to work well together.”

With top scorer Artemi Panarin traded to the Kings before the Olympic break and captain JT Miller on injured reserve, Sullivan is exploring various combinations for his top six forwards.

Lafrenière, who spent most of the season playing alongside Panarin and Vincent Trocheck, has recorded five goals and eight points in his last four games, notably achieving his second career hat trick against the Flames.

On the other hand, 20-year-old Perreault, who was the team’s first-round pick in 2023, has also made strides, collecting three goals and four assists in his past five games—matching his goal tally from his first 31 NHL games.

“I think [Lafrenière] is fitting right in,” Zibanejad remarked, celebrating his own milestone of 800 career points. “It’s important to make plays and learn, even from mistakes. But you need to keep pushing forward.”

“They were fantastic out there. I’m thrilled for Lafrenière to get that hat trick. It was a pleasure playing alongside them.”

The team’s performance has markedly improved since the league-wide shutdown in early February. They had only won three of their previous 18 games but have now lost just once in regulation in their last seven matches (4-1-2).

“I’m genuinely pleased with the guys. They’re working hard and really playing for one another,” Sullivan said. “Their effort has been commendable, though not flawless.”

“After the holidays, we discussed the importance of treating this as a fresh start and focusing on enjoying our daily efforts to see where it leads us.”

As the Rangers look ahead to the remaining 18 games in the season, key concerns include Lafrenière’s strong finish and Perreault’s development as an influential forward at the NHL level. The new Zibanejad line brings a sense of hope.

“They were phenomenal. Whenever they got the puck, you could feel the potential,” Lafrenière noted. “It’s just about supporting them and being available. Things are improving, and it really feels better. Winning makes everything more enjoyable.”
