Review of the Brooklyn Bedding cooling mattress

My Experience with a Brooklyn Bedding Mattress

After a month with my new Brooklyn Bedding mattress, I have to say, it’s kind of surprising how much I’ve come to appreciate it. You know, as someone who frequently talks about the importance of sleep, I think I should’ve known better. But, here we are.

I’ve always been a fan of sleep aids, which, okay, isn’t exactly relevant to this conversation. Before I got this mattress, I didn’t know much about quality bedding. My first purchase after graduating was a basic IKEA mattress, and then I switched to a Memory Foam option from Amazon a few years back.

Finally, I decided it was time for a proper “Big Girl Mattress.” Interestingly enough, since I got this one, I’ve used sleep aid only once—part of my research for another story.

About Brooklyn Bedding

Interestingly, despite the name, Brooklyn Bedding is actually based in Arizona. It was named after one of the founders’ daughters, which is kind of sweet. The brand has been a pioneer in the “bed-in-a-box” model, offering a variety of mattresses to meet different needs—including options for athletes and plus-size sleepers, plus those with advanced cooling technology.

That’s exactly what I got: the luxurious cooling of the Aurora model.

Strong Points and Cons

Pros:

  • Easy setup for two.
  • Plenty of support.
  • Cooling technology works wonders for hot sleepers.
  • No unpleasant chemical smell when unpacked.
  • Feels durable, particularly in the area where I sleep most.

Cons:

  • If you don’t work out often, you might struggle a bit to set it up yourself.
  • The medium feels a bit stiffer than I expected.

This mattress has six layers: a glaciotex cooling cover, an optional cooling pillow top, and another layer designed for heat dispersion. Below that are foam layers, a support coil core, and a sturdy base foam.

Pricing starts at $999 for a twin, while a California King with a pillow top costs about $2,665. Each mattress is made to order, which means shipping takes about 10 days from the order date. The brand offers a 120-night “Comfort Trial” with a $99 return fee during that time.

The limited lifetime warranty includes free repairs or replacements for the first 10 years. It’s reassuring to know it’s designed to last, as long as you take care of it.

Delivery and Setup

When my mattress arrived, it was surprisingly compact, making it easier for my doorman to bring it to my apartment. Generally, you’d want two people for setup, but I managed to do it solo. It was quite the workout, to be honest.

The mattress was hefty—115 pounds for the queen pillow top, which I definitely couldn’t lift alone. I ended up cutting the box open and maneuvering it out layer by layer.

Unwrapping the plastic was a bit time-consuming. The instructions suggested setting it up on the bed frame, but I found that once the plastic was off, the mattress started to puff up and became a bit of a handful.

Once unpacked, it quickly expanded to its full size, and thankfully, there was no chemical smell. Although it took some creative maneuvering, I managed to get it on the bed, and the whole process took me about 30 minutes.

How Long Have I Been Testing?

I’ve now slept on this mattress for over a month. It took some getting used to, but I quickly adapted to how it felt beneath me. It was definitely different from my previous mattress, a little stiffer than I expected, feeling more like a 7 out of 10 on the firmness scale. Not bad, but something to keep in mind.

Brooklyn Bedding suggests either soft or medium firmness based on your sleep position and weight—I probably should’ve opted for the softer option. They’ve got showrooms scattered around the country, including one relatively close to me in Manhattan, which would have been helpful for trial.

Final Verdict

I have to say, I really like the cooling feature of this mattress. I woke up several times wearing my matching sweat set, which always used to turn into an overheated mess on my old mattress.

Investing in a more expensive mattress has certainly paid off. I can feel the quality as soon as I lie down, and I think it will last me for years. Definitely worth it, but I’d recommend testing it first to ensure it meets your preferences.

Choosing the Best Mattress

Brooklyn Bedding offers various options, including ones that accommodate different sleep types. The brand recommends a mattress that feels like “being hugged” for side sleepers needing extra pressure relief. If you’re a combo sleeper, balance between contouring and support is essential, and for stomach sleepers, firmer options with added support are suggested.

You can review the specifics based on sleep position and weight to help you decide what’s best for you.
