NFL Community Mourns Nick Mangold’s Passing
The NFL community is grieving the loss of Nick Mangold, a legendary center for the New York Jets, who passed away on Saturday night due to complications related to kidney disease. He was just 41 years old.
Mangold, a member of the Jets’ Ring of Honor, dedicated all 11 seasons of his NFL career to New York. Rex Ryan, who coached him for six of those years, expressed his heartbreak during an ESPN segment, visibly emotional as he spoke about his former player.
“It’s cruel. He’s such a wonderful young man,” Ryan said, clearly moved during the discussion.
Beloved by players and coaches alike, Mangold was respected from the moment he was drafted 29th overall by the Jets in 2006 after a stellar career at Ohio State. He had recently revealed on social media that he was dealing with a genetic defect that led to his kidney issues and had reached out to followers, asking for Type O kidney donors.
In a hopeful message earlier this month, he stated, “Though the times remain challenging, I remain positive and focused on the road ahead. I look forward to better days and returning to full strength soon.”
Ryan reminisced about Mangold’s spirit, recalling a game when he was clearly injured yet insisted on playing to support his coach. “This kid was great and way too young. I feel so bad for his wife and family,” Ryan said, needing consolation from Hall of Fame player Randy Moss.
The Jets confirmed Mangold’s passing early Sunday morning. Jets owner Woody Johnson shared, “Nick was more than just a legendary center. He was a mainstay on our offensive line for 10 years, and his leadership defined an era of Jets football. Off the field, his warmth and loyalty made him a cherished member of our Jets family.”
Throughout his career, Mangold made seven Pro Bowl appearances and secured first-team All-Pro honors in 2009 and 2010, the year the Jets reached the AFC Championship Game.
Last November, he expressed his gratitude for having played his entire career with the Jets, saying, “It’s really special for me to be able to finish my career here and play for just one team.” He reflected on the passionate Jets fan base, recognizing their loyalty.
