Rex Ryan’s Take on Bills’ Coaching Change
Rex Ryan has some strong opinions about the Bills’ recent decision to part ways with Sean McDermott. On ESPN’s “Get Up,” he suggested that the team should turn to Bill Belichick, the former Patriots coach and Ryan’s longtime rival, after their weekend loss to the Broncos.
“We need to bring in someone who’s proven they can reach the Super Bowl,” Ryan proclaimed. In his eyes, Belichick stands out as the only viable replacement for McDermott.
Ryan also recommended that Belichick should consider bringing back Brian Daboll as the offensive coordinator. Daboll, who was dismissed by the Giants, previously worked as an assistant under Belichick and served as the Bills’ offensive coordinator from 2018 to 2021, helping develop quarterback Josh Allen.
The 73-year-old Belichick and the Patriots parted ways following the 2023 season. After a brief stint with the Falcons, he found himself in television for the 2024 season. Then, out of the blue, he accepted the head coaching position at the University of North Carolina in December 2024. However, his time there quickly became chaotic, partly due to his relationship with his 24-year-old girlfriend, Jordon Hudson, who was often seen on the sidelines during games.
Belichick’s inaugural season at UNC resulted in a 4-8 record, with only two wins in the ACC. While he remains publicly committed to the Tar Heels, there’s been speculation about a return to the NFL ever since he arrived in Chapel Hill.
Under McDermott, the Bills seemed to have a promising opportunity to reach the Super Bowl, especially with long-time nemesis Patrick Mahomes and the Chiefs missing the playoffs. After defeating the Jaguars in the wild-card round, the Bills faced heartbreak in overtime against Denver. The loss was marred by contentious calls, which left McDermott visibly frustrated, especially after a crucial interception.
“It’s difficult to grasp why it was ruled that way,” McDermott stated. “I had a chance to review it, but it’s hard to wrap my head around. If that’s the case, why didn’t we ensure we got the call right?” He added, “This was a pivotal play, and we were in a strong position.”
