Rex Ryan to interview for Jets head coach opening

Rex Ryan will get a chance to sell the Jets at Tuesday's reunion.

The Jets are scheduled to interview the former head coach for his old job in Florida on the same day, according to sources.

Ryan, 62, led the Jets from 2009 to 2014.

He and his team went 46-50 in the regular season and 4-2 in the postseason, leading the Jets to back-to-back AFC Championships in 2009 and 2010. This was the team's last playoff appearance.

Ryan coached the Bills for two more years, going 15-16, and was fired before the final game of his second season.

Ryan currently serves as an analyst for ESPN and has not been shy about his desire to return to his old job.

“I want to, there's no question about it,” Ryan said of saving the Jets on “Pardon My Take” in November. “I have a great job and I told everyone I was definitely interested in the job.

“I think there's unfinished business, especially with that series. That particular franchise, you know my dad. [Buddy Ryan] He's been there forever, he won the Super Bowl, and that's very close to me. If I think I can make a difference, I will go back to that team and I think I can make a big difference with that team. ”

Jets general manager Mike Tannenbaum, who hired Ryan, is helping the Jets find a new head coach and general manager. Tannenbaum currently works with Ryan at ESPN.

Jets owner Woody Johnson still likes Ryan, who excited the team with his bold talk and entertaining style.

Ryan had great success in his first two years, leading the team to a 20-12 record and reaching the playoffs both times. Things didn't go well, however, and Ryan replaced Tannenbaum in 2013 after going 8-8, 6-10, 8-8, and 4-12 in his final four seasons with the team. He fought with GM John Idzik.

The Jets have already interviewed Ron Rivera and Mike Vrabel for the head coaching position, and are expected to interview candidates currently working with the team this week.
