Robert F. Kennedy Jr. has responded to a viral photo that appeared to show him eating a barbecued dog by claiming it was actually a goat.

Last year, Robert Kennedy Jr. texted a photo to a friend in which he posed next to an unidentified woman in front of the remains of barbecued dog meat. Kennedy had told the friend, who was traveling in Asia, that it might be fun to find a restaurant in Korea that served dog meat on the menu, suggesting he had tried it. According to the metadata in the digital file, the photo was taken in 2010, the same year that Kennedy was diagnosed with dead tapeworms in his brain. (A veterinarian who examined the photo said the carcass was from a dog, pointing out 13 pairs of ribs, including the characteristic “floating ribs” seen in dogs.)
The photo quickly went viral on social media, with many criticizing it as evidence of animal cruelty, with Robert F. Kennedy Jr. saying the photo was actually a picture of a barbecued goat in Patagonia.
“When a veterinary expert calls a goat a dog or a forensic expert says a photo taken in Patagonia was taken in South Korea, you know you’ve joined the ranks of the supermarket tabloids,” the candidate wrote in the post.
