RFK Jr. Criticizes Ron Wyden for Years of Inaction on Childhood Chronic Diseases

Debate Over Childhood Health Issues

Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. took aim at Oregon Senator Ron Wyden on Thursday, highlighting his concerns about a health crisis affecting children.

During a hearing of the Senate Finance Committee, Wyden accused Kennedy of endangering children during his time in HHS. In response, Kennedy pointed out that Wyden oversaw a notable increase in childhood chronic illnesses while in office.

“This is about children being harmed due to reckless and repetitive decisions that keep scientists and doctors sidelined and allow conspiracy theories to shape our health policies,” Wyden stated. “It seems you don’t regret your actions or have plans for change… I want to convey to Americans that it’s an unacceptable sacrifice for an agenda I believe is fundamentally cruel and illogical.”

Responding to Wyden’s accusations, Kennedy questioned, “Senator, how long have you held your position? Over the past 20 to 25 years, chronic illnesses in children have surged to 76%. And you’ve remained silent! What’s the reason for this? We learned today that infant mortality rates have increased for the first time in two decades, not because of my presence here but during the current administration.”

In May, HHS released a report identifying ultra-processed foods as a significant factor in declining childhood health. The report highlighted that the chemical manufacturing industry spent approximately $77 million lobbying in 2024.

According to the report, “The American diet has markedly shifted to ultra-processed foods (UPF), which has led to nutrient depletion, higher calorie intake, and exposure to harmful additives.” It notes that nearly 70% of children’s caloric intake now comes from UPF, playing a role in obesity, diabetes, and various chronic diseases.
